Freeze

In a study of 298 rape survivors, 70% reported significant tonic immobility during the assault: a physiological body-lock they could not override (Möller, Söndergaard & Helström, 2017).

Freeze is not weakness. It is older than thought.

The body locks

The defense cascade identifies freeze as the body’s first response to threat, before flight or fight are even attempted (Kozlowska et al., 2015).

Freeze includes:

  • Tonic immobility: body cannot move despite wanting to
  • Dissociation: “this isn’t happening to me”
  • Numbing: emotional shutdown
  • Collapse: fainting, “playing dead”

These are brainstem reflexes selected over millions of years. The brainstem acts in milliseconds. Thought can’t catch up.

The non-physical version

Modern freeze rarely looks like literal paralysis. It looks like:

  • Procrastination that is deeper than avoidance: you literally cannot start
  • Shutdown in conflict: mind goes blank, words won’t come
  • Chronic fatigue without medical cause
  • Dissociation under stress: “zoning out”
  • Emotional flatness for hours or days after a triggering event

People in chronic freeze are often misdiagnosed as lazy, depressed, or avoidant. The underlying state is a threat response the system never turned off.

Why freeze gets weaponized

  • It looks like choice. “Why didn’t you fight back? Say something? Leave?”
  • The person often cannot answer. The system acted before they could decide.
  • Shame rushes in afterward. “I should have done X.” But the nervous system had already chosen.

If you could have fought or run, you would have. Freeze is what happens when neither was possible.

Why this matters

  • Freeze is physiological, not a decision. The brainstem overrides intention in milliseconds.
  • 70% is not an edge case. Tonic immobility is the modal response in severe threat.
  • Misdiagnosis is common. Freeze gets labeled laziness, cowardice, or depression.
  • Shame amplifies it. “I should have done X” loops keep the freeze system active.
  • The fact that you didn’t resist is not evidence you consented. It is evidence the system chose freeze.

The body is not asking your permission. It is keeping you alive with whatever tool has worked longest.
