What’s a Complex Fraction?
A fraction that has fractions in its numerator, denominator, or both.
x−12x+11
How to Simplify
Rewrite as division, then flip and multiply.
Example: Simplify the complex fraction above
Step 1: Rewrite as division
x+11÷x−12
Step 2: Flip and multiply
x+11×2x−1
Step 3: Multiply across
=2(x+1)x−1
Another Example
4x22x
Rewrite as division:
2x÷4x2=2x×x24=2x24x=x2
Alternative Method: Multiply by LCD
Instead of rewriting as division, multiply numerator and denominator by the LCD.
Example: Simplify 2x1+1
The LCD of all fractions is x. Multiply top and bottom by x:
2⋅x(x1+1)⋅x=2x1+x
